# Identify linear and nonlinear functions

An equation whose graph is a straight line is called a linear function. A linear function has an equation that can be written in the form of y=mx+b. Equations whose graphs are not straight lines are called nonlinear functions. Linear function Nonlinear function

Determine whether the function is linear or nonlinear. The graph of a linear function is a straight line. This graph is not a straight line. So, this is a nonlinear function.

Determine whether the function is linear or nonlinear. The graph of a linear function is a straight line. This graph is a straight line. So, this is a linear function.

Determine whether the function y=3x is linear or nonlinear.

Linear, y=3x can be written as y=mx+b.

Determine whether the function y=x2+3x-1 is linear or nonlinear.

Nonlinear, y=x2+3x-1 cannot be written as y=mx+b.
