Simplify expressions involving integers and absolute values

When working with absolute
value, expressions are simplified much in the same way as expressions that contain parentheses. Any operations contained within the absolute value bars are evaluated first, using the correct order of operations.

Simplify the expression |-16 + 7|

*The first step in simplifying is to combine -16 and 7, which is equal to -9.*

Remember that the -9 is still inside the absolute value bars.

Now evaluate the absolute value of -9: |-9|=9.

Simplify the expression |-16| +|7|

*In this example only single values are contained within the absolute value bars.*

Evaluate within the absolute values first.

Since |-16|=16 and |7|=7, the problem then becomes 16+7=23.

Find the value of the expression |24-(-4)|

|24-(-4)|=|24+4|=|28|=28

Find the value of the expression |-8|+|-6|

|-8|+|-6|=8+6=14

Find the value of the expression -|-7|-|-5|

-|-7|-|-5|=-7-5=-12
