Customary Units

This system of measurement is used most often in the United States .

It includes linear measurement (length and distance), weight (how heavy an object is), capacity (the amount that a container can hold), and temperature (how hot or cold it is).

### Units of Length

The system for measuring length in the customary system is based on the inch , foot , yard , and mile.

### Units of Weight

The system for measuring weight in the customary system is based on ounce, pound, and ton.

### Units of Capacity

The system for measuring capacity in the customary system is based on cup, fluid ounces, pint, quart and gallon.

Note:

(a) To convert from larger units to smaller units, multiply by the appropriate unit ratio.

(b) To convert from smaller units to larger units, multiply by the reciprocal of the appropriate unit ratio.

(c) Multiplying or dividing by a unit ratio is mathematically equivalent to using a proportion to convert between units of measure.
